100 Toolbox Talk Topics for Construction Crews#

A toolbox talk is a five-to-ten-minute safety conversation held at the work area before the shift starts. It is not a training course. The goal is to get the crew thinking about one specific hazard they will face today, and to record that the conversation happened.

The hardest part is not running the talk. It is coming up with a relevant topic every day for a year. This list is organized so a foreman can pick a topic that matches the work actually scheduled, rather than reading a generic sheet nobody listens to.

How to run a five-minute toolbox talk#

  1. Pick the topic from today's work. If the crew is on a scissor lift this morning, the talk is about the lift, not about hearing protection.
  2. Ask, don't read. Start with a question: "What is the one thing that goes wrong on this lift?" Let the crew answer.
  3. Cover three points. The hazard, the control, and what to do if the control fails.
  4. Tie it to the site. Name the specific location, equipment, or subcontractor involved.
  5. Record it. Topic, date, job, presenter, attendees, and any concern raised. A photo of the sign-in sheet or a digital form with signatures both work. The record is what an auditor asks for.

Working at heights (1 to 12)#

  1. Fall protection: when a harness is required and when guardrails are enough
  2. Harness inspection before every use
