Ainsworth Inc. was founded in 1933 by brothers F.C. and C.J. Ainsworth during the Great Depression, beginning with humble industrial work installing electrical equipment in horse barns throughout Toronto. By 1936, the company expanded into electrical construction, and during World War II, they undertook major contracts across Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. In 1946, the Ainsworth brothers incorporated as Ainsworth Electric Co. Limited, establishing four distinct divisions and later adding an Engineering Division in 1953. The company built its flagship headquarters at 131 Bermondsey Road in Toronto in 1957, which remains their primary office today. Over subsequent decades, Ainsworth grew to become one of the largest electrical contractors in Toronto, with over 700 electricians at peak operations. The company completed major landmark projects including the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) in 1989. In 2015, Ainsworth joined the GDI Group of Companies, a publicly traded facility services leader on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX:GDI). In November 2016, Ainsworth acquired Direct Energy Business Services Ltd. (Airtron), significantly expanding its multi-trade service capabilities. Today, Ainsworth stands as one of North America's leading integrated multi-trade companies with approximately 2,440 employees across North America.
