Jonas alternativesJonas runs the books. Appello runs the field.
Jonas Construction Software is a construction ERP built for the controller: general ledger, payables, receivables, US and Canadian payroll, and a service back office in one database. Appello is built for the field and the job: crews, foremen and project managers clocking time, filling out safety forms and seeing the schedule on the phone, with union pay rules and job cost worked out before the hours reach payroll. Appello does not keep a ledger or run payroll, so many contractors keep an ERP for the books and run the field in Appello.
Why trade contractors pick Appello instead
The usual reason is the field. These are the parts contractors tell us they could not get their crews to do in an ERP.
Crews actually use it
Foremen clock the crew in by job and cost code on the phone. Clock-ins outside the job's geofence are flagged with a reason, not blocked.
Union rules before payroll
Agreements, trade levels, wage regions and overtime rule sets price every hour. Approved days keep their rates when an agreement renews.
Your own safety forms
Build hazard assessments and toolbox talks with 14 question types. Workers sign with a PIN and every submission is emailed to its recipients.
Tickets checked on the schedule
The daily schedule shows each worker green, yellow or red against the job's required certifications. It warns before anyone drives to site.
Keep your payroll system
Approved, locked weeks export to Sage 50, QuickBooks Online or Desktop, Dayforce Powerpay, Payroll4Construction, ComputerEase or a plain CSV.
Margin while the job runs
The estimate becomes the budget. Approved labor, bills and expenses land on the cost code, and the WIP report shows over and under billing.

When Jonas is the better choice
- You want the general ledger, payables, receivables and payroll in one database from one vendor.
- You need certified payroll produced by the same system that cuts the cheques.
- Service contracts, flat-rate pricing and counter sales are a large share of your revenue.
- You need counter sales, a tool crib and auto-reorder alongside purchasing, with inventory out of beta.

Questions about Appello and Jonas
Can Appello replace Jonas?
Not entirely. Appello does not keep a general ledger or run payroll, so it does not replace Jonas's accounting and payroll. It can replace the field side: crew time, scheduling, safety forms, certifications and job progress. Many trade contractors keep an ERP or QuickBooks Online for the books and run their crews in Appello, exporting approved hours instead of re-keying timesheets.
Does Appello integrate with Jonas?
Not with a live connection. We have not found a public API for Jonas Enterprise, so there is no sync between the two today. Appello exports approved, locked hours as a plain CSV file that your office imports into Jonas payroll. Anything more than that file, such as invoices or costs flowing back automatically, is not available.
Is Appello a construction ERP?
No. Appello is a field-to-office platform for trade contractors. It covers time, scheduling, safety, certifications, estimating, job costing, progress billing and equipment, and it connects to your accounting system rather than replacing it. Invoices and time go to QuickBooks Online, and approved hours export to Sage 50 and other payroll systems.
Which is better for a union mechanical contractor?
It depends on who the system is for. If the controller wants ledger, payroll and certified payroll in one database, Jonas fits. If the problem is getting foremen to submit accurate time, forms and certifications, with union rates, travel and board worked out before payroll, Appello fits. Some contractors run both, with a file between them.
