BuildOps alternativesService-first or project-first? Pick the one built for your work.
BuildOps is built for commercial contractors whose work centers on service: dispatch, assets, preventive maintenance and techs in trucks, alongside project jobs. Appello is built for project-heavy trade contractors: union crews on multi-week jobs, with agreements, trade levels, overtime rules, travel and board worked out in the app before the hours reach payroll. BuildOps says itself that it does not calculate prevailing wage or complex union rules. If most of your revenue is service, BuildOps is likely the better fit.
Why project contractors pick Appello instead
Contractors who chose Appello over a service platform usually had one reason: the pay rules on a union crew.
Union rules before payroll
Agreements, trade levels, wage regions and overtime rule sets price every hour. Approved days keep their rates when an agreement renews.
Travel, board and parking
Zones measured from the union hall, the office or the worker's home, or pay by distance. Paid once a day, on the right job.
Crews actually use it
Foremen clock the crew in by job and cost code on the phone. Clock-ins outside the job's geofence are flagged with a reason, not blocked.
Your own safety forms
Build hazard assessments and toolbox talks with 14 question types. Workers sign with a PIN and every submission is emailed to its recipients.
Tickets checked on the schedule
The daily schedule shows each worker green, yellow or red against the job's required certifications. It warns before anyone drives to site.
Margin while the job runs
The estimate becomes the budget. Approved labor, bills and expenses land on the cost code, and the WIP report shows over and under billing.
Appello and BuildOps, side by side
BuildOps leads on service and on ready-made accounting connectors. Appello leads on union pay rules.

When BuildOps is the better choice
- Most of your revenue is service: maintenance visits, preventive maintenance and techs dispatched to equipment all day.
- You run Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Viewpoint Vista or Spectrum and want a ready-made connector.
- You need inventory in production today, not in beta.
- Your crews are merit-shop with simple daily and weekly overtime, so union rate rules don't come into it.

Questions about Appello and BuildOps
Is Appello a good alternative to BuildOps?
For project-heavy contractors with union crews, yes. Appello works out agreement rates, overtime rule sets, travel and board before the hours reach payroll, which BuildOps leaves to the payroll platform. For service-heavy contractors running maintenance agreements and dispatching techs all day, BuildOps is the stronger product, and Appello's work orders and dispatch board are still in beta.
Does Appello calculate union and prevailing wage rates?
Yes. Each job sits in a wage region, and each worker has an agreement and a trade level. Appello prices every hour from those, with rate parts such as base, vacation pay and health and welfare. It does not fill in WH-347 certified payroll forms; it exports the hours, classifications and rates those forms are built from.
Does Appello do service work orders?
In beta. Work orders with labor, materials and checklists, and a dispatch board with technician rows, are turned on per customer. They are newer and lighter than BuildOps's service tools. If maintenance agreements and service dispatch are most of your business, compare that part closely before choosing Appello.
Which accounting systems does Appello connect to?
QuickBooks Online, both ways: invoices, bills and time move across and paid status comes back. Approved hours also export to Sage 50, QuickBooks Desktop, Dayforce Powerpay, Payroll4Construction, Avantage, ComputerEase or a plain CSV. Appello has no ready connector for Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Vista or Spectrum today.
