Construction payroll export

Approved hours go to payroll without re-keying a line

Appello turns the approved pay period into the file or feed your payroll system takes: Sage 50 Canada and US, QuickBooks Desktop, a direct push to QuickBooks Online, several construction payroll formats, and a plain CSV for anything else. It is for the payroll clerk or controller who closes the week at a union or merit-shop trade contractor. Only approved hours leave Appello, and a locked week stays the way it was paid. It is live today.

Construction payroll export: how it works

1

Pick your payroll system once

Choose the system payroll runs in, in company settings. The export menu then offers its format next to the plain CSV: a timesheet file or a time-slip import (IMP) for Sage 50 Canada, a file for Sage 50 US, an IIF file for QuickBooks Desktop, or a push to QuickBooks Online.

2

Export the pay period your way

The Payroll Report follows your pay period — weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly — with a tab for each collective agreement. Each row shows a worker's hours by day and by rate label, plus travel, board and parking. Export one agreement, or every agreement in one file.

3

Only approved hours, checked first

Hours that aren't approved stay out of the file. Before it is built, a confirmation screen checks each row for what the payroll system needs, such as an employee number, and shows how many are ready. Paid leave can be included or left out for the whole company, one agreement or one worker.

4

Push straight to QuickBooks Online

With QuickBooks Online connected, hours go across as time activities with the payroll item for each rate. Appello checks that every worker is linked first, and every customer and job too when you require job sync, lets you fix a missing link on the spot, and tells you when the export is done.

A normal week with it

  1. Monday morning

Supervisors finish approving last week's timesheets. Anything still waiting for approval is simply not in the export.

  2. Monday, payroll hour

Open the Payroll Report, check each agreement's totals, and export to your payroll system or push to QuickBooks Online.

  3. Right after

Lock the week on the Timesheets page. Hours in a locked week can't be added, changed or deleted until someone with permission unlocks it.

What payroll costs without an export

Without an export, someone reads the approved timesheets and types them into payroll. Every worker, every week, on a deadline.

  • Hours are keyed twice, and one transposed number becomes a cheque correction.
  • Travel, board and parking come from a separate sheet, or get missed.
  • A timesheet changed after payroll runs leaves the job costs and the pay stubs disagreeing.
  • When the payroll clerk is away, nobody else knows how the numbers were put together.

Construction payroll export: common questions

Which payroll and accounting systems can Appello send timesheets to?

Appello exports approved timesheets to Sage 50 Canada (timesheet CSV or time-slip IMP), Sage 50 US, QuickBooks Online (direct push), QuickBooks Desktop Pro (IIF), Dayforce PowerPay, Payroll4Construction, Avantage and ComputerEase. Any other system can take the plain CSV. There is no PDF payroll export, and hours that aren't approved stay out of the file.

Does Appello run payroll or cut the cheques?

No. Appello does not run payroll or cut cheques. It prepares the approved hours and allowances — travel, board and parking — and hands them to the payroll system you already use. Deductions, remittances and cheques stay where they are today, in your payroll system.

What if a timesheet needs fixing after the week is locked?

In Appello, someone with permission to lock weeks unlocks it, the correction is made, and the week is locked again. While a week is locked, nobody can add, change or delete hours in it, so the timesheets stay the way they were paid. Weeks are locked and unlocked on the Timesheets page.
