Founded in 1921 by World War I veterans William R. Black and William "W.J." McDonald, Black & McDonald began as an electrical contractor providing wiring services to residences and small businesses in Toronto. Following the death of his partner in 1946, W.J. McDonald took the company forward and was eventually joined by his two sons John and Bill during the 1950s. By the early 1970s, Black & McDonald had expanded coast-to-coast with a national network of Canadian offices and service offerings that included electrical contracting, mechanical contracting, sheet metal fabrication, HVAC and refrigeration maintenance and repair, and utility contracting. The company's geographic expansion into the United States began in the 1990s with entry into the US utility construction and asset management market in Kansas City. Today, Black & McDonald is owned and led by the third generation of the McDonald family, completing over $2.1 billion in sales annually with more than 6,800 employees operating out of 40+ offices across North America. The company has grown from its humble start as residential electrical wiring contractors to become one of North America's most respected integrated, multi-trade service providers.
